ABSTRACT

Purpose: Employee health is a major challenge for enterprises. Fostering a healthy work environment and promoting employee engagement are key to addressing this challenge. Health-promoting leadership and employee health are the driving forces of corporate development;at the same time, employability is the core element of employee relations. Based on self-determination theory, this study aims to explore the effects of health-promoting leadership and employee health on employee engagement in light of employee employability. Design/methodology/approach: The data of this study encompass 723 valid questionnaires from employees of MSME in China. This study focuses on health-promoting leadership and employee health, engagement relationship and the above relationship moderating by employability. Findings: Health-promoting leadership plays a key role in the workplace, results show that health-promoting leadership has a positive impact on employee health and employee engagement, while employee health did not have a positive effect on employee engagement. Employability negatively moderated the relationship between employee health and employee engagement. Research limitations/implications: This study is based on cross-sectional survey data collected at the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic rapidly and continuously changed the organizational responses to employee health. Future studies could utilize longitudinal methods or focus on measurement instruments of the culture of health, to create additional insights about health promoting. Originality/value: This study adds important knowledge regarding health-promoting leadership and employee health in Chinese MSMEs, an area for which limited research exists. The findings provide insights and knowledge about health-promoting leadership how to affect employee health and to improve engagement outcomes. ABSTRACT

In China, Perillae folium is widely used to treat colds, especially in the early stages of cold; the effect of taking P. folium is readily noticeable at that time. The active compounds and targets of P. folium were screened from Traditional Chinese Medicine Systems Pharmacology, Chinese Pharmacopoeia, and UniProt. Targets related to the initiation and progression of 2019 Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) were retrieved from Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man and GeneCards. The potential therapeutic targets of P. folium on COVID-19 were the cross targets between them. Enrichment analysis of Gene Ontology (GO) function and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway were conducted by using the Database for Annotation, Visualization and Integrated Discovery website. Molecular docking between key compounds and core targets was performed with AutoDock. The effects of P. folium extract and rosmarinic acid on inflammatory cytokines were tested by a cellular inflammatory model. The "Perillae folium-compound-target-COVID-19" network contained 11 kinds of compounds and 33 matching targets. There were 261 items in the GO functions (P < .05) and 67 items linked to the KEGG signaling pathways (P < .05). Luteolin and rosmarinic acid were key compounds of P. folium. Their docking with the core targets mitogen-activated protein kinase 1 (MAPK1) and chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 2 (CCL2), respectively, showed that they had good affinity with each other. Cell experiments demonstrated that P. folium extract had inhibitory effects on interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α in cells, and was better than rosmarinic acid. Luteolin, rosmarinic acid, and other individual active compounds in P. folium, which may participate in PI3K-Akt, TNF, Jak-STAT, COVID-19, and other multisignaling pathways through multiple targets such as MAPK1 and CCL2, and play a therapeutic role in COVID-19.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has severely accelerated the transformation and rapid organisational change in the workplace. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the hotel industry will not fade in a short time, and the long-term coexistence with the COVID-19 pandemic pressure is a real dilemma for the hotel industry. The topic of How to create employee positive workplace outcomes (task performance and innovative work behaviour) during the COVID-19 pandemic has garnered increasing interest in both practical and academic fields. Leaders play a critical role in influencing employee workplace outcomes, yet few studies have explored the predicting role of health-promoting leadership. Drawing upon the conservation of resources (COR) theory, this study aims to examine the employability mediator effect and workplace civility as the moderator effect in the relationship between health-promoting leadership and employee-positive workplace outcomes (task performance and innovative work behaviour). We conducted a two-wave survey of 421 participants from the hotel industry in China and formulated a series of hypotheses that were tested with structural equation modelling. The results showed that health-promoting leadership has a significant positive effect on employees' employability (ß = 0.479, p < 0.001), task performance (ß = 0.250, p < 0.001), and innovative work behaviour (ß = 0.446, p < 0.001). Employability has a significant positive effect on task performance (ß = 0.438, p < 0.001) and innovative work behaviour (ß = 0.296, p < 0.001). This study makes certain contributions to the extant hotel industry employees' positive workplace outcomes literature by attending to the healthy leadership styles that promote employability during the COVID-19 pandemic, and its novel point is to evaluate the workplace civility moderating effect between the above model. It also provides practical insight that mutual transformation in workplace relationships inspire those positive outcomes.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: The angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) as well as the transmembrane protease serine type 2 (TMPRSS2) have been found to play roles in cell entry for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus causing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). SARS-CoV-2 infection risk and severity of COVID-19 might be indicated by the expression of ACE2 and TMPRSS2 in the lung. METHODS: A high-salt diet rat model and renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) blockade were used to test whether these factors affect ACE2 and TMPRSS2 expression in the lung. A normal (0.3% NaCl), a medium (2% NaCl), or a high (8% NaCl) salt diet was fed to rats for 12 weeks, along with enalapril or telmisartan, before examining the lung for histopathological alteration. Using immunofluorescence and qRT-PCR, the localization as well as mRNA expression of ACE2 and TMPRSS2 were investigated. RESULTS: The findings provide evidence that both TMPRSS2 and ACE2 are highly expressed in bronchial epithelial cells as well as ACE2 was also expressed in alveolar type 2 cells. High-salt diet exposure in rats leads to elevated ACE2 expression on protein level. Treatment with RAAS blockers had no effect on lung tissue expression of ACE2 and TMPRSS2. CONCLUSIONS: These findings offer biological support regarding the safety of these drugs that are often prescribed to COVID-19 patients with cardiovascular comorbidity. High salt intake, on the other hand, might adversely affect COVID-19 outcome. Our preclinical data should stimulate clinical studies addressing this point of concern.

ABSTRACT

We investigated the molecular mechanism by which Houttuynia cordata Thunb (HCT) may intervene in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and COVID-19-induced cytokine storms using network pharmacology and molecular docking approaches. Using the Traditional Chinese medicine Systems Pharmacology Database and Analysis Platform (TCMSP), a "component-target-pathway" topology map of HCT for COVID-19 treatment was constructed using Cytoscape. Core target genes were analyzed using the STRING database, and the signal pathway map and biological mechanism of COVID-19 therapy were obtained using cluster profilers. Active components of HCT were docked with severe respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) 3C-like protease (3CLpro) and RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) using AutoDockTools. Data visualization and statistical analysis were conducted using the R program. A molecular dynamic simulation was carried out with the Groningen Machine for Chemical Simulation program. HCT had six active anti-COVID-19 ingredients and 45 molecular targets. Their crucial target proteins for COVID-19 treatment were the RELA (nuclear factor kappa B [NF-κB] p65 subunit), interleukin 6, and mitogen-activated protein kinase 1. In functional enrichment analysis, the potential molecular targets of active components of HCT for COVID-19 treatment belonged to 18 signaling pathways (adjusted P = 2.12E-11). Gene ontology obtained by Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genome enrichment screening showed that the primary mechanism of COVID-19 treatment was upregulation of protein kinase C followed by downregulations of T cell differentiation and proliferation and NF-κB signaling. Molecular docking showed that the active components of HCT (quercetin and kaempferol) had similar binding affinities for SARS-CoV-2 3CLpro and SARS-CoV-2 RdRp, primary COVID-19 target proteins as did clinically used drugs. These results were confirmed with molecular dynamics simulation. In conclusion, multiple components of HCT, especially quercetin and kaempferol, have the potential to treat COVID-19 infection and COVID-19-induced cytokine storm by targeting multiple proteins.

ABSTRACT

For more than a year, the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has had a devastating effect on global health. High-, low, and middle-income countries are struggling to cope with the spread of newer mutant strains of the virus. Delivery of acute stroke care remains a priority despite the pandemic. In order to maintain the time-dependent processes required to optimize delivery of intravenous thrombolysis and endovascular therapy, most countries have reorganized infrastructure to optimize human resources and critical services. Low-and-middle income countries (LMIC) have strained medical resources at baseline and often face challenges in the delivery of stroke systems of care (SSOC). This position statement aims to produce pragmatic recommendations on methods to preserve the existing SSOC during COVID-19 in LMIC and propose best stroke practices that may be low cost but high impact and commonly shared across the world.

ABSTRACT

This paper further extends the existing GARCH-MIDAS model to deal with the effect of microstructure noise in mixed frequency data. This paper has two highlights. First, according to the estimation of the long-term volatility components of the GARCH-MIDAS model, rAVGRV is adopted to substitute for the RV estimator. rAVGRV uses the rich data sources in tick-by-tick data and significantly corrects the impact of the microstructure noise on volatility estimation. Second, besides introducing macroeconomic variables (i.e., macroeconomic consistency index (MCI), deposits in financial institutions (DFI), industrial value-added (IVA), and M2), Chinese Economic Policy Uncertainty (CEPU) index and Infectious Disease Equity Market Volatility Tracker (EMV) are introduced in the long-run volatility component of the GARCH-MIDAS model. As indicated by the results of this paper, the rAVGRV-based GARCH-MIDAS is slightly better than the RV model-based GARCH-MIDAS. In addition to the common macroeconomic variables significantly impacting stock market volatility, CEPU also substantially impacts stock market volatility. Nevertheless, the effect of EMV on the stock market is insignificant.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: The impact of COVID-19 pandemic on endovascular therapy (EVT) for acute ischemic stroke in China is unknown. This study was aimed to verify the volume change of EVT for acute ischemic stroke affected by COVID-19 and its potential factors.Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted via an online questionnaire survey in China. The questionnaire was mainly composed of descriptive information, volume change of EVT for acute ischemic stroke, and the protection status of medical staff.Results: A total of 103 stroke physicians in 28 provinces across China completed the survey questionnaire. A volume decline in EVT for acute stroke occurred in 93 (90.3%) hospitals after lockdown (23 January 2020). Nearly half of the hospitals (51/103, 49.5%) experienced a volume decline of EVT case more than 50% and 14 (13.6%) hospitals completely ceased offering EVT. Hospitals with decline >50% of EVT case had higher proportion of hospitals with a designated area for COVID-19 screening in the emergency room (44/51, 86.3% vs 34/52, 65.4%, p= 0.01) and medical staff in quarantine (19/51, 37.3% vs 7/52, 13.5%, p< 0.01), with lower proportion of hospitals with personal protective equipment protocol (41/51, 80.4% vs 49/52, 94.2%, p= 0.03) than hospitals with decline ≤50%.Conclusions: The volume of EVT for acute ischemic stroke severely declined after lockdown in China. Designating a specific area for COVID-19 screening, insufficient personal protection and understaffing may exacerbate the volume decline of EVT.

ABSTRACT

Since the worldwide outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019, angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) has received widespread attention as the cell receptor of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 virus. At the same time, as a key enzyme in the renin-angiotensin-system, ACE2 is considered to be an endogenous negative regulator of vasoconstriction, proliferation, fibrosis, and proinflammation caused by the ACE-angiotensin II-angiotensin type 1 receptor axis. ACE2 is now implicated as being closely connected to diabetes, cardiovascular, kidney, and lung diseases, and so on. This review covers the available information on the host factors regulating ACE2 and discusses its role in a variety of pathophysiological conditions in animal models and humans.

ABSTRACT

The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak began in the city of Wuhan, whereupon it rapidly spread throughout China and subsequently across the world. Rapid transmission of COVID-19 has caused wide-spread panic. Many established medications have been used to treat the disease symptoms; however, no specific drugs or vaccines have been developed. Organoids derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) may serve as suitable infection models for ex vivo mimicking of the viral life cycle and drug screening. Human iPSC-3D organoids, self-organised tissues with multiple cell environments, have a similar structure and function as real human organs; hence, these organoids allow greater viral infection efficiency, mimic the natural host-virus interactions, and are suitable for long-term experimentation. Here, we suggest the use of a functional human iPSC-organoid that could act as a reliable and feasible ex vivo infection model for investigation of the virus. This approach will provide much needed insight into the underlying molecular dynamics of COVID-19 for the development of novel treatment and prevention strategies.

ABSTRACT

During the COVID-19 epidemic, the treatment of critically ill patients has been increasingly difficult and challenging. During the epidemic, some patients with neurological diseases also have COVID-19, which could be misdiagnosed and cause silent transmission and nosocomial infection. Such risk is high in a neurological intensive care unit (NCU). Therefore, prevention and control of epidemic in critically ill patients is of utmost importance. The principle of NCU care should include comprehensive screening and risk assessment, weighing risk against benefits and reducing the risk of COVID-19 transmission while treating patients as promptly as possible.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-Cov-2), now named coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), may change the risk of stroke through an enhanced systemic inflammatory response, hypercoagulable state, and endothelial damage in the cerebrovascular system. Moreover, due to the current pandemic, some countries have prioritized health resources towards COVID-19 management, making it more challenging to appropriately care for other potentially disabling and fatal diseases such as stroke. The aim of this study is to identify and describe changes in stroke epidemiological trends before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: This is an international, multicenter, hospital-based study on stroke incidence and outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic. We will describe patterns in stroke management, stroke hospitalization rate, and stroke severity, subtype (ischemic/hemorrhagic), and outcomes (including in-hospital mortality) in 2020 during COVID-19 pandemic, comparing them with the corresponding data from 2018 and 2019, and subsequently 2021. We will also use an interrupted time series (ITS) analysis to assess the change in stroke hospitalization rates before, during, and after COVID-19, in each participating center. CONCLUSION: The proposed study will potentially enable us to better understand the changes in stroke care protocols, differential hospitalization rate, and severity of stroke, as it pertains to the COVID-19 pandemic. Ultimately, this will help guide clinical-based policies surrounding COVID-19 and other similar global pandemics to ensure that management of cerebrovascular comorbidity is appropriately prioritized during the global crisis. It will also guide public health guidelines for at-risk populations to reduce risks of complications from such comorbidities.
